Each spring, the Virginia Tech Police Department hosts a hot dog luncheon that benefits Special Olympics Virginia.

On average, the luncheon raises about $3,000 for Special Olympics Virginia events such as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg Police Departments participate in each year.

2017 Hot Dog Luncheon

This year’s luncheon was held on Tuesday, May 16 at the Public Safety Building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event raised $4,120 from sales of hot dog meals, candy bars, and Special Olympics hats and t-shirts. More than 600 employees and community members attended the event.

Local businesses sponsor the event each year and donated the foods and supplies needed to make the meals. This year's sponsors included Coca-Cola, Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili, Bottom of the Stairs, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Long John Silvers, Heathwood Market, Bojangles, McCoy Funeral Home, Virginia Tech Services Inc., Food Lion, Centerplate, Walmart, Wades Foods, and Kroger. 32 volunteers from across the university donated 768 individually wrapped baked goods. During the event, 25 volunteers also helped roll, bun, and wrap the hot dogs as they were made.
