Message from the Chief of Police

Dear Hokie Nation,

On behalf of the entire Virginia Tech Police Department staff, I want to thank you for taking the time to learn about us.

The mission of the Virginia Tech Police Department is to enhance the safety and quality of life for students, faculty, staff and visitors through effective law enforcement and proactive crime prevention in partnership with the university community.  The department is dedicated to fair, equitable, and compassionate policing with a focus on community outreach. Our mission of advancing safety and security is anchored by the Virginia Tech Principles of Community. These fundamental values — mutual respect, civility, and service — underscore our daily interactions with the campus community.

As a full-service, law enforcement agency, we are committed to providing quality service to the community.  We demonstrate our professionalism through adherence to over 400 best practice accreditation standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).   More importantly, we view every citizen encounter as an opportunity to make a positive connection with our community.  To that end, we host a number of formal and informal programming opportunities in order to connect in meaningful ways throughout the year.   

An important concept that we regularly state is that the safety and security in our community is a shared responsibility.  We cannot be everywhere so we rely on our community members to stay vigilant.  It is through strong partnership with our community — students, faculty, staff, local residents, visitors, and law enforcement across Blacksburg and Montgomery County — that we are able to accomplish our mission. Relationship building remains at the heart of our efforts to connect and serve the campus community.
