Request Records

The Virginia Tech Police Department releases records pursuant to Code of Virginia § 2.2-3704 an § 19.2-389. At the sole discretion of the Virginia Tech Police Department, anyone petitioning for the release of a record may be charged for costs incurred by compliance with said petition Id. F-I and A.11&40, respectively.

Personal or private information, and information regarding educational records of involved parties may be redacted from copies of reports, as such information may be exempt under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (COV § 2.2-37) and/or protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g).

Records Request

To request a copy of a record, please visit https://virginiatech.nextrequest.com. Please include as much information as possible, such as date, type of incident, names of individuals involved, etc.  For accident reports, please include the vehicle description in your request.

Receiving Options

You may select from one of two options provided for receiving a requested record:

  • Pick-up: The report will be held in the Virginia Tech Police Department's Security Center, located at 330 Sterrett Drive, Blacksburg, VA. We ask that once you have been notified that the requested report is available, you pick it up within 2 days. Our Security Center is open 24/7.
  • USPS Delivery: The report will be mailed to whatever address is provided in the email request.

Reports cannot be transmitted electronically due to the sensitive nature of the documents.
