Pedestrian Safety

Bikes lined up on bike rack

Pedestrian involved motor vehicle crashes represent 10 percent of all traffic fatalities each year in Virginia. Stay alert when crossing roads and be mindful of your surroundings. Be aware of whether a motorist will be able to see you in time to stop, especially when emerging between parked cars, after stepping off a bus, or around sharp turns in a road.

It is also important for cyclists to be mindful of their surroundings. Cyclists are especially vulnerable when crossing roads because their reaction time to approaching vehicles is slowed by having to dismount their bicycle. Unless traveling inline with traffic, cyclists should always walk their bicycle across the road.
