Personnel Feedback

The Virginia Tech Police Department is committed to providing our community with the highest quality of law enforcement services and we value feedback.  We seek to reward excellent performance and administer corrective action in those instances where an employee fails to meet our standards.

To commend or compliment the performance of a Virginia Tech Police Department employee, notify a police department supervisor by:

  • Visiting the police department located at 330 Sterrett Drive.
  • Calling the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-231-6411.
  • Mailing comments to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 330 Sterrett Drive, Public Safety Building, Suite 280, Blacksburg, Virginia 24060.
  • Emailing the office of Chief of Police at vtpolice@vt.edu

When a commendation or compliment is received verbally or by mail, this information is forwarded through the chain of command to the chief of police. Letters of commendation from citizens are often posted for all employees to view. The police department and its employees appreciate the effort and consideration that citizens demonstrate by taking the time to commend employee performance.

It is the policy of the Virginia Tech Police Department to investigate all allegations and complaints of misconduct against any member of the police department. Proper adherence to the provisions of this policy will clear the innocent and facilitate prompt and equitable corrective disciplinary action.

To make a complaint against a Virginia Tech Police Department employee, notification should be made to a department supervisor:

  • In person by visiting the police department located at 330 Sterrett Drive
  • In writing by emailing the office of the Chief of Police at vtpolice@vt.edu 
  • In writing by mailing comments to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 330 Sterrett Drive, Public Safety Building, Suite 280, Blacksburg, VA 24060
  • By calling the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-231-6411

Letters or telephone calls may be anonymous. Any complaint received by a member of the police department is directed to supervisory personnel. On all complaints, a Virginia Tech Police Department personnel complaint report is completed by a police department supervisor based on the information that you provide. You may request a copy of the completed complaint report. If the allegation of misconduct is serious in nature, the chief of police or a designee, (in the chief’s absence), will be notified as soon as practical. Examples of serious allegations include:

  • Criminal activity
  • Complaints against command personnel
  • Complaints of excessive force

Complaints received concerning employees will be assigned to the employee’s supervisor or division commander in the following instances:

  • Complaints of demeanor
  • Violations of lesser rules and regulations, except those involving criminal activity

An Internal Affairs Investigator will be responsible for investigations of the following:

  • Complaints of criminal activity
  • Complaints against command personnel
  • Complaints involving the discharge of firearms
  • Complaints of excessive force
  • Other complaints deemed necessary by the chief of police

Notifications will be made to the reporting party informing them of the result of the departmental investigation. If the complainant does not provide contact information, this notification cannot be made. In Internal Investigations involving a great amount of time, a status letter may be sent from the Chief of Police explaining the status of the investigation.

Caution: Any false, misleading, or untrue statements, accusations, or allegations made in relation to the employees of the police department may lead to civil or criminal sanctions.
